virtualisation

Virtualisation solutions and services address a range of factors that influence IT infrastructure’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions: power consumption, utilisation of devices, the size and number of operating facilities, and e-waste.

Through virtualisation, organisations can reduce the number of physical devices – not just in the data centre, but also on the network and at the desktop. This reduces the size and number of facilities required to house and operate equipment, increases the longevity of devices (especially at the desktop) and reduces the proliferation of equipment by providing them with the capability to perform multiple functions.

Virtualisation can have a strong impact on reducing carbon emissions in relation to energy consumption, but also in relation to the emissions produced during the device lifecycle – from manufacture to disposal. Organisations can potentially save costs by reducing the number and size of facilities required for business operations, requiring less energy for heating, cooling and lighting; and lower building management costs. By reducing the number of physical devices, organisations not only save on power consumption, but also on the cost of purchasing new equipment, maintaining it during operating life and disposing of it at end-of-life. Therefore, energy efficiency is not just a “green ICT strategy” – it is also ICT best practice to decrease waste, reduce cost and remove complexity.

Green ICT strategies should be treated as an extension to existing ICT best practice.

Dimension Data’s virtualisation services and solutions address an organisation’s requirement to reduce its use and reliance on electricity in the data centre, in its buildings and facilities, on the network and at the desktop.

Services and Solutions

  • Office Sustainability Services is a set of four complementary service modules designed to help office-based organisations build and execute their responses to climate change.
  • Server Virtualisation Assessment is consulting service that helps you unlock the true value of your server environment, maximise your current investment and accurately determine your future capacity requirements.
  • Storage and Server Consolidation is a structured approach to desktop lifecycle management minimises the operational effort and costs associated with deploying, managing and supporting distributed desktop computing environments.

In addition to Virtualisation services and solutions, Dimension Data has grouped its Carbon-Friendly Infrastructure solution offerings into three other key areas. Each of these solution offerings are aligned to existing IT solutions, addressing existing ICT best practice, in addition to delivering a green benefit to our clients:
