Dimension Data is committed to reducing its corporate impact on the environment.

We are demonstrating this by:

  • examining our own business operations and those of our partners and suppliers;
  • disclosing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission levels and the risks and opportunities of climate change for our organisation;
  • developing an Environmental Management System based on the ISO 14001 framework;
  • achieving ISO 14001 certification within the organisation; and
  • participating in industry bodies and councils addressing environmental sustainability issues.

To reduce our own GHG emissions, we have engaged a professional business services firm to help us develop a Carbon Management Plan (CMP). This CMP formalises and expands on a range of internal and client-focused energy reduction initiatives which we have been involved with since 2006. The plan, including its objectives and targets, will also provide a framework for a range of global carbon reduction initiatives that we will implement, monitor, review and improve on over the coming years.

The Carbon Management Plan will form a key component of our Environmental Management System (EMS) and of our broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. Built around our existing risk management framework, our EMS will be launched first in three pilot geographies (United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia) which were selected as their collective GHG emissions contribute to over 67% of our FY07 GHG inventory and they collectively represent a broad suite of the group’s business models, and consequently, our environmental risk. Based on the ISO14001 framework, Dimension Data aims to seek certification in each region, with two subsidiaries, Express Data and Plessey, already achieving ISO14001 certification in October 2009.

The environmental responsibility demonstrated by our existing and potential manufacturers and suppliers will increasingly play a part in our procurement decisions. To this end, we will adopt an environmental procurement policy as part of our EMS, and review our suppliers’ environmental credentials with a key focus on their takeback programs and the management of electronic waste.

Dimension Data is also a member of the Green Grid consortium of IT companies which has a mandate to work together to find ways to enhance energy-efficiency in data centres and business computing systems.

In 2009, we submitted our second submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), ranking again in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).
