carbon disclosure project

In 2008, Dimension Data completed our first submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), disclosing to the public, specifically the investment public, our company’s carbon footprint and how climate change is affecting Dimension Data’s business. In May 2009, we once again submitted to the CDP, disclosing not only our strategy to combat climate change, but how we will drive business growth in this precariously balanced financial and carbon economy.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (www.cdproject.net) is a not-for-profit organisation backed by upwards of US$55 trillion in assets, and on behalf of its signatory members, seeks transparent information about the affects of climate change on global business.  In its seventh year of accumulating information on the impact of climate change, over 3,000 businesses from varying industry sectors contributed information about their greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, risks and opportunities posed by climate change, performance and reduction targets and governance models.  The CDP is the world’s largest repository of GHG emissions data in the world.

In 2008, Dimension Data submitted to the CDP for the first time. As a predominantly services-based business, Dimension Data has a relatively small GHG inventory; however we are conscious that the IT industry, in which we operate, is a significant contributor to the world’s CO2 emissions and that conversely the ICT industry has the potential to cut GHG emissions by up to five times the size of the industry’s own GHG inventory, reducing emissions in general business by 15% by 2020.  Responding to the CDP in 2008 marked the beginning of a broader environmental journey for Dimension Data and our commitment to develop a strategy to reduce our GHG emissions.

Dimension Data’s response to CDP2009, launched in October 2009, detailed progress made by our company since our 2008 submission, and disclosed quantitative information about the energy reduction initiatives implemented across our regions.

Also disclosed in our response are the opportunities that climate change presents to Dimension Data.  As a member of the ICT industry, Dimension Data has the opportunity to help decrease GHG emissions five times the size of our industry’s own GHG inventory, reducing GHG emissions in general business by 15% by 2020.  Dimension Data has developed a suite of consulting services – Office Sustainability Services – that are designed to help an office-based organisation build and execute its response to climate change. This suite of services, together with a range of other environmentally-sustainable services and solutions are grouped under What We Offer Clients.

For the second consecutive year, Dimension Data has ranked amongst the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), indicating our good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.

Complying with the CDP’s questionnaire supports Dimension Data’s own drive to baseline our GHG emissions and set reduction goals for the future. In line with our environmental strategy, Dimension Data has also commenced the development of our Environmental Management System (EMS) in 2009.
