MEA

As the name of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) umbrella programme suggests, our people reach out with the combined strength of their heads, hearts and hands. Our employees choose which causes and initiatives they’d like to support, so we touch not only the lives of community members who need it most, but also the hearts of our colleagues who engage with the organisations and causes closest to them.

Data Centre Solutions spinathon raises funds for school jungle gym

The Data Centre Solutions team in Johannesburg ran a spinathon at the Sunninghill Virgin Active gym. Friends and colleagues burnt up the bike miles to raise money for a new jungle gym for Tshwarangano Primary School. The event was about having fun, enjoying each other’s company and getting a good workout while raising money for a worthy cause. All funds from the spinathon, and other donations, were put towards the jungle gym, which Dimension Data employees installed. Our employees also gave the children party packs and made hot dogs for them.

Members of staff joined the Data Centre Solutions team to build a jungle gym and hand out party packs and hot dogs to 400 children at Tshwarangano Primary School.

Merchants demonstrates its commitment to youth employment

Columba Leadership is a youth leadership academy that integrates with the Merchants Future Leaders programme. By engaging with the values of responsible leadership, learners are shown how to be agents of positive social change, and how to think creatively and initiate projects within their communities.

For the last two years, Merchants has connected with a Johannesburg school facing significant social challenges, to help empower learners to drive positive social change. Since then, the school’s Grade 12 results have risen significantly from 53% in 2010, to 68% in 2011 and an impressive 81% in 2012. In January, Merchants welcomed three young graduates from the 2012 class into first-time employment.

Built on the belief and commitment that every human being has exceptional potential, the Merchants business is a rich talent pool for leadership and a wonderful incubator for the development of leadership talent. It also provides viable career opportunities and progression in an industry that’s pivotal to the government’s plan to grow youth employment in South Africa
