As the name of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) umbrella programme suggests, our people reach out with the combined strength of their heads, hearts and hands. Our employees choose which causes and initiatives they’d like to support, so we touch not only the lives of community members who need it most, but also the hearts of our colleagues who engage with the organisations and causes closest to them.

Our Group Head Office’s Heads, Hearts and Hands initiatives are focused primarily on the Hearts of Hope children’s home in Johannesburg.

The home’s vision is to ‘provide a platform of family-based care for vulnerable children who are affected and/or infected by HIV/AIDS’. Hearts of Hope cares for 14 children between the ages of 18 months and 17 years.

In honour of Nelson Mandela and the sacrifices he made for his country, South Africans are encouraged to spend 67 minutes giving something back to their communities once a year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday. In 2012 members of the Group Head Office Human Resources and Finance teams gave their 67 minutes to the delightful children of Hearts of Hope. Employees shared lunch with the children and staff of the home, and spent the remainder of the afternoon face painting and playing games with the children.

Nick Efstathiou from Group Finance expressed what it meant for him to be part of this short, yet heart-warming visit. ‘It’s the small things in life that make a difference. Sometimes we get so consumed by our everyday lives that we forget about what really matters. Yesterday put things back into perspective for me, and a small gesture like the one we made will go a long way in changing those little ones’ lives. Thanks to all who arranged it, and count me in next time.’
