The Research and Development (R & D) Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer is an entry level position in the R & D Quality Assurance Engineering job family.

The primary responsibility of the R & D QA Engineer is the growth of the organisation’s technology portfolio through concept/idea formulation and prototype development in line with the business strategy, requirements and specifications. These individuals participate in the evolution and execution of procedures for ensuring the quality of new features and releases of software. They will be required to interact with software development teams, Project Managers and Business Analysts and create and/or translate business requirements into executable test plans. R & D QA Engineers estimate, plan and coordinate testing activities ensuring that quality issues and defects are appropriately identified, documented, tracked and resolved in the relevant systems. This individual will clearly outline the current state of the products and projects by communicating any and all risks to the team throughout the project lifecycle.

What you'll be doing

Execute strategy

The R & D QA Engineer is responsible for the execution of the Dimension Data strategy by contributing technical expertise to Research and Development programs. They provide program oversight and identify and pursue new business opportunities that are aligned with business strategic plan. These individuals contribute technical expertise on a range of programs, system development, test planning and execution in the deployment environment.

Analyse business requirements

The R & D QA Engineer work closely with Business Analysts to determine business and user requirements and prepare a functional requirements document, including context and system flowcharts that diagrammatically show how the information will flow through the computer and its peripheral or related equipment. They analyse the business requirements and ensure that the designed solution meets these requirements. 

Develop test plans/cases

The R & D QA Engineer works with the project team to translate the functional requirements into testable scenarios, test cases and test plans to test each software component and demonstrate the business condition under the test and the expected results. They write test plans and scenarios in an articulate manner. They develop and design test cases, ensuring test case coverage and ensure the preparation of the test environment. They quality assure and sign off the test plan and test cases and/or data prior to its execution.

Execute testing process

They ensure the co-ordination of the test plan and partner with the relevant stakeholders to allocate and schedule test resources. These individuals are accountable for the execution of the testing process.  Throughout the execution process, they review the test progress and ensure that test results are analysed and recorded. R & D QA Engineers ensure the tracking and fixing of defects, recording detailed metrics and monitoring these to track progress and the outcomes of the test process.

They ensure that fixed defects are retested timeously and the correct status is assigned to it in the defect list. The R & D QA Engineer works with the Project Manager and ensures the reporting of progress and issues to the client. They also respond to escalated queries and ensure its resolution.

Test sign off

Once the testing process has been completed, the R & D QA Engineer finalises and documents the final test results and sign off on these. He/she makes recommendations and also ensures user acceptance sign off.

Implement and deploy application

R & D QA Engineer works with Architects, Project and Technical teams to assist with the installation and deployment of the application. This includes implementation preparation, implementation of the solution into a production environment and resolution of any problems identified in the integration and test phases.

Validate quality processes

These individuals validate quality processes by determining operational testing plans and performance qualification, writing and updating quality assurance procedures, and revising approval process documentation and samples.

Conduct risk analysis

R & D QA Engineer provides knowledge and support to development teams to produce quality assurance plans focused to conduct risk analysis, identify critical control points and recommend preventive measures. 

Provide reports

They prepare reports summarizing information and trends including failed processes, stability studies, recalls, corrective actions, and re-validations. These individuals investigate customer complaints in partnership with technical service and product management teams.  

Conduct research

The R & D QA Engineer studies trends and developments in quality management, participating in educational and training opportunities, reading professional publications, and maintaining personal networks. They contribute to a culture of innovation by proactively generating novel concepts for new products and enhancements to current product performance.

Behavioural skills

R & D QA Engineers have good analytical skills which enable them to quickly and meaningfully understand functional requirements. These individuals are able to work with abstract concepts and have good problem solving skills. They are able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including technical teams and clients. They are proactive in their approach and have high levels of motivation, being a self-starter with good planning and organising skills. These individuals are methodical and they have good knowledge of project management principles.
