Challenge

Improving the user experience

Thiess is a global mining contractor that has been mining since the early 1940s. It currently has mines in Australia, Indonesia, Mongolia, and South Africa and has a turnover of approximately USD 4 billion.

Thiess was faced with an ageing WAN optimisation fleet and needed to find a replacement for its existing technology, which would not only reduce latency and bandwidth usage, but also provide a better overall experience for remote users.

Thiess wanted to consolidate data and provide better performance for applications delivered from its current data centre environment. Thiess also wanted to be able to provide a consistent end- user experience of those applications and be able to report on that experience, as well as achieve savings by reducing the data footprint at remote sites.

‘Our WAN optimisation fleet was ageing and we decided to go to market to find a replacement. We’d been working with Dimension Data for quite some time, so we partnered with the company and pretty much gave them our technical and business requirements and asked them to go away and review the market for us. We really wanted to drop the capital and operating costs and simplify the ICT support model,’ said Williams.

Solution

Lifecycle approach delivers solution

‘Dimension Data led a top down, consultative approach to uncovering the right solution for Thiess. It was incumbent on us to be the trusted adviser for Thiess, to ensure that it got a solution that fit its particular needs,’ said Ben Creevey, Connectivity Practice Manager, Dimension Data.

‘We used a solutions-to-services lifecycle approach – an end-to-end process from early engagement, where we look at architecture and business requirements, through to the planning phase, where we look at the solution options and finally operational management,’ continued Creevey.

From this process, Riverbed emerged as the appropriate solution. Riverbed is an application performance platform that allows clients to move applications into the data centre without impacting the experience of the user. We recommended a proof of concept to explore Riverbed’s capability. The pilot exceeded Thiess’ expectations and it then proceeded to a full roll- out of the solution.

Result

Innovation and driving down costs

‘We rolled out the technology to roughly 93 sites, covering approximately 5,500 users. We were able to consolidate two boxes into one and reduce our maintenance costs by around 63% across our sites, which is a significant saving. By reducing that, we were able to essentially fund the project. Instead of spending money on maintenance we are able to spend money innovating on new technologies,’ said Williams.

‘At the end of that we had the reporting product which gave reports like I’ve never seen before. Well, I’ve kind of dreamed about having [these kinds of reports] on the network but have never really had them because generally those reporting products cost an absolute fortune. But, with this holistic approach that Dimension Data and Riverbed came back with, it was what we wanted, just what we needed and it’s made our life a lot easier since,’ concluded Brad McGinn, Senior Network Architect, Thiess.
