Singapore Rugby Union partners with Dimension Data Asia Pacific to power the local female rugby scene

Singapore, 7 March 2018 – Singapore Rugby Union received a $60,000 boost after Dimension Data, a USD8 billion global technology integrator and managed services provider, announced a one-year partnership today.

The partnership will see Dimension Data aid in the development of the female rugby scene – covering all aspects such as players, referees, and junior development.

The Singapore Rugby Union has taken massive steps in the development of the women’s game here in the last few years – with the Women’s 7s team the 2nd best team in the region and were agonisingly close in their bid to qualify for the 2018 Asian Games.

With local universities such as the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University aiding the grooming of young female rugby talents, there’s been a steady stream of eager women who aspire to represent Singapore one day – both in the 15s and 7s variant of the game.

Speaking of the partnership, National Women’s 7s Coach and ex-National captain Wang Shao Ing said, “This partnership is certainly a move in the right direction in terms of developing the women’s game here, and the support by Dimension Data will help to further elevate the women’s standing in the sport of rugby amongst not only local rugby players but those abroad as well.”

The players will not be the only one benefitting from this partnership though, as Dimension Data aims to boost the profile of female referees here as well. Mary Pringle, the first local female referee under the age of 18, said, “There’s been a rise in female referees here in Singapore in the past couple of years, and I hope that this partnership will help amplify the females’ profile when it comes to rugby refereeing. I have always dreamt of representing Singapore as a referee on a global scale and this partnership would definitely propel us in the right direction.”

Commenting on the partnership, John Lombard, CEO at Dimension Data Asia Pacific said, “At Dimension Data, we believe in gender diversity and this is part of our commitment to empower women in male-dominated sports such as rugby. The sponsorship will develop not only Singapore Rugby, but also the women’s role in the rugby scene. The SRU is already moving in the right direction when it comes to nurturing female rugby players and referees of all ages, and we are hoping to further improve the process and help achieve their dreams of being the best at what they do for Singapore. Also, in the coming years, we will be looking at ways to help SRU innovate and digitize their IT infrastructure for improved user and viewing experience.”
