Why

Why Westside School District had to digitally transform its classrooms

Westside School District understands that there’s a critical need to embrace technology to help its students, teachers, and administrators. When it came time to upgrade its network, it saw the opportunity to create something that would empower both students and teachers.

Westside School District is the largest elementary school district in Los Angeles, with 9,500 students in 12 schools, and 1,200 staff. As they grew they needed their technology infrastructure to keep up. The District already had a strong focus on using technology to empower students, teachers and administrators and change the way they’re taught and how they learn.

With increasing numbers of students and staff linking their own devices to the network it was essential to ensure the Wi-Fi was up to the task. In addition to leveraging technology to improve educational outcomes, they needed to improve the security infrastructure at their schools, to ensure that the school was able to provide a safe and secure environment for students.

How

How Westside School District leveraged technology to make their schools smarter and safer

To prepare its students for their educational future, the Westside School District needed to upgrade the networks serving their 12 schools. It also allowed them to implement security systems that would keep students safe and the facilities secure.

As Westside School District embarked on a process to create a technology platform for a new school they realised there was an opportunity to refresh the technology across all 12 schools in the district. The new network needed to enable the school to cater for the growth in students and staff bringing their own devices – such as phones and tablets - to school. It also had to be capable of supporting emerging new applications.

The district was required to upgrade the security at its schools to ensure that the school could be locked-down in the case of an emergency. This entailed the deployment of CCTV cameras which could be remotely monitored, as well as doors that could be unlocked/locked by staff from a central location.

What

What access to the latest technology means for teachers and students

Equipping teachers with the right technology gives them access to essential resources during lessons. It changes how children are taught, and how they learn.

Westside School District has embraced the opportunities that technology offers to ensure they’re able to enhance their student’s opportunities. The fully modernised systems increase student’s academic performance and improve the classroom experience. The network provides both students and teachers with access to the latest resources, allowing them to tap into a pool of knowledge that wouldn’t have been accessible before.

The security improvements allow the district to monitor their facilities and react quickly in emergencies. An additional benefit has been the reduction in vandalism at the schools, due to the implementation of monitoring systems.
