After introducing OneCloud, Rock IT experiences 60% business growth without a significant investment in headcount or capex.

An Australian IT outsourcing and managed services provider, Rock IT was founded in 2003 in Melbourne to service the IT needs of small to medium businesses (SMBs) and quickly established a business model that offered full IT outsourcing and managed services for organisations that typically had very few or no specialist in-house IT staff.

In 2005, Rock IT’s Managing Director Nik Devidas began considering the options available to extend the company’s service offerings with cloud solutions, giving his company the capacity to scale, become more competitive in the mid-market space and open up new market opportunities.

‘We knew that cloud is what we wanted to do,’ says Devidas. ‘We looked at the costs involved in doing it ourselves and even if we spent a million dollars on infrastructure, we would still not have been able to compete with the big players at the time.’

Rock IT made the decision to become a reseller of cloud services, consuming the services as it needed. Initial partnerships proved unsuccessful, however, in 2009, Rock IT engaged with us, migrating its customers across to what was then Dimension Data’s Hosted Exchange solution.

With the success of the migration and partnering with us, Rock IT started considering what other ‘as-a-service’ style offerings were possible on our cloud platform. Rock IT was given the opportunity to accelerate their cloud service offerings with the launch of Dimension Data’s Managed Cloud Platform (MCP) and our channel programme in 2012.

Rock IT had specific criteria to meet in its evaluation of potential tier one cloud providers, and Dimension Data’s OneCloud Partner Programme was the right fit, explained Devidas.

‘Dimension Data was the right cloud partner for us with a strong Australian presence, a clear international focus, and access to senior technical architects who could both assist us with the design of the solution and also attend client meetings with us.

‘The partnership ties in perfectly to the client-focused approach we have as a business. It’s not as simple as spinning servers up in the cloud. There is a whole management piece that is wrapped around it, and that is where we really add the value.’

Rock IT is utilising Dimension Data’s Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) product to host their managed service offerings consisting of: Hosted Desktop, Hosted Exchange, Email Security, Hosted WAN, cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery, and cloud Telephony.

Utilising Dimension Data’s OneCloud partnership, Rock IT is able to combine customer intimacy with private connectivity and access to world class global cloud and hosting infrastructure and services.

‘A lot of small and mid-market businesses want the best infrastructure available from a tier one infrastructure provider, and Dimension Data’s name always comes up,’ said Devidas. ‘These businesses also want an interface to this infrastructure and access to a tier one provider from a company like Rock IT – small, nimble, agile and responsive.

‘It’s like Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket – our clients don’t have to spend the world to get access to the services they want.’

In partnering with us, RockIT has seen revenues grow by 60% in the twelve months, without significantly increasing headcount. The company can now compete successfully in the Australian midmarket and is also able to serve the ISV market.

In late 2012, Rock IT was approached by ISV, FastTrack Recruitment Software, to discuss a potential move of its business to a cloud-based service. An established market leader in recruitment industry software, FastTrack’s applications had been designed to run on on-premise Windows server hardware. To redevelop its software for cloud, FastTrack was facing a very costly project but, more critically, a two-year development cycle that would have a major impact on its revenues.

Instead, Rock IT was able to design a solution that enabled FastTrack to migrate its legacy software to the cloud both rapidly and cost-effectively, allowing FastTrack to offer its customers a cloud-based option while it continued to work in parallel on redeveloping its applications for native, web-based delivery.

‘We were able to build out an emulation product on Dimension Data’s IaaS platform, based on a Microsoft Remote Desktop Services [RDS] deployment that is active-active in disaster recovery across multiple geographies,” said Devidas.

Now FastTrack can sell cloud immediately with its existing products and Rock IT is now working with other ISVs on the same journey.

‘We are now “fast tracking” that journey to the cloud for other ISVs,’ said Devidas. ‘ISVs with legacy applications with code that was first written in the 1980s and ‘90s are often facing a two-year project and 2 to 3 million dollars to redevelop their applications for the cloud. Now, their clients are saying “enough is enough – I can move absolutely everything to the cloud except your product, so I am going to look elsewhere for the application I need.” That experience has been reiterated to us by a number of ISVs.’
